Bathroom Vanities: The Furniture Appeal

A subtle but interesting trend in bathrooms combines stock cabinets with embellishments to create beautiful “furniture-look” vanities. Now, if you’re a DIYer, you can take an old table or console and create a unique bathroom vanity. However, today’s cabinet companies are adding furniture style pieces that take stock cabinets to the next level of design.

Here we highlight some of the most popular ways to achieve a stunning furniture-look vanity.

Legs.

Cabinet companies continue to impress with new leg styles to fit any design theme. Keep in mind the finished look you want to achieve. Look at the details of a favorite piece of furniture and incorporate them into a custom, furniture-style vanity. Furniture style doesn’t have to be super-ornate. The simple addition of legs that raise the cabinet off the floor transforms a vanity into a piece of furniture. Finally, adding legs to a vanity gives it an open and airy feel making your bathroom feel larger.

Base Molding.

Use this option if you don’t want to clean under the vanity. Furniture base molding in combination with a recessed toe kick behind works to ensure you don’t have clean under the cabinets.
You won’t be able to see the recessed toe kick from eye level behind the furniture base and this feature tricks the eye into thinking the cabinets are standing on feet.

Moldings & Embellishments.
The selections for moldings and embellishments are wide-ranging. Incorporating either one or both gives you the opportunity to add a level of detail that you don’t see on a standard stock cabinet. You can choose options from corbels, decorative doors and posts to pilasters, fillers and wainscoting.

Lighting.

LED lights have captured the imagination of cabinet companies. LED’S are long-lasting and energy-efficient and can be hidden in, under and around cabinets. There are two ways to utilize LED lighting with your vanity: task and accent.
Task lighting focuses on a specific area to make it easier to perform your work or task. By utilizing this type of lighting, you can reduce eyestrain and the physical discomforts that come with it. Task lighting is available inside drawers and cabinets…now you actually see what’s in the back! Choose task lighting that gives you the practical use but enhances the look of the vanity.
Accent or Ambiance lighting can be direct or indirect depending on the atmosphere you are trying to create. It can be used to set the tone of a room or spotlight a possession. This type of lighting is used to set an impression and will highlight a furniture-look vanity.

Hardware. Adding hardware is another way to bring the sophistication of a furniture look to your cabinets. Think of hardware as jewelry to your cabinet.  Just like in a wardrobe, it must coordinate, be comfortable and enhance the design of the outfit. So before you buy, do your research, order samples and check finishes.

Whether it is time to update your bathroom or you are building a new home, consider furniture-look vanities to enhance the overall look and feel of the space.
