A large set of bookshelves in a home provides hands-down, one of the best opportunities for creating warmth and comfort. I absolutely love working with clients’ personal items in order to bring style to the space, and create a story. The biggest challenge I see with most people, is that they just don’t know where to begin. Here are some tips for tackling that next bookshelf project with confidence: 1. Keep a color theme – Try all white books, shades of blues, or soft neutrals such as tans, creams and light grays. Incorporate accessories in those same palettes. 2. Place similar sized books together – Each shelf will vary, but this type of uniformity will be much easier to look at. 3. Change the orientation – Keep some books straight up and down, and place some horizontally by stacking them. Only place accessories on top of stacked books. 4. Don’t pack every shelf – Leave a little empty space on each shelf, otherwise they’ll looked too cramped and visually run into the next shelf. 5. Paint your shelves – If you don’t have an ample supply of books and accessories for your bookshelves, let the painted back wall, or the bold color of the entire bookcase act as the interest.
